Description
The Venepor Shopping Centre, part of a complex of the same name comprising housing, services and retail outlets, opened in the 1980s, alongside many other shopping centres of a similar scale that were built across the country. From the 1990s onwards, these facilities came under pressure from large-scale shopping centres, which still dominate consumer habits today.
The former Venepor Cinema, which opened when the shopping centre was launched, faced competition from the cinemas within these new large-scale developments and eventually closed; it was subsequently acquired by Maia Municipal Council to be used as the Municipal Auditorium.
Since 2009, the venue has been home to the Maia Film Club, which organises fortnightly film screenings and other events throughout the year, and is one of the city’s most active cultural associations.
