Description
Rooted in a profound sense of longing—one that encompasses both loss and desire, in with bare feet touching the sky I yearn, the artist yearns for a queer future that is wilder and rawer than the anxious, ossified present. This future is multifaceted—shrouded in mystery, erotic, and nonlinear. It is linked to more-than-human ecologies and, like life itself, is chaotic and nonbinary.
At the heart of JMS’s practice lies an understanding of performance as a powerful and contemporary ritualistic modality. He draws inspiration from queer, ecological, and esoteric thought, viewing his performances and films as tenuous spaces, like ceremonies, as a way to cultivate sensitivity, reorient attention, and touch the rawest edges of experience. Joseph lives in London but most often works in dialogue with the damp, windswept moors of the Pennines and the hills of Cumbria in northwest England.
