Description
In the former Imperial biscuit factory, housed in a middle-class townhouse dating from the second half of the 19th century, there was a bit of everything: concrete slabs, metal trusses, aluminium windows, fibre-cement roof tiles, industrial tiles and, of course, remnants of the original construction — the chestnut wood floor structure, the façade with stone masonry and early 20th-century tiles, wooden windows, partition walls, and so on.
The building occupied the entire plot. Not demolishing everything — a decision we made early on — meant accepting that this heterogeneity would have to be retained (and even enhanced) in the new development, designed to house a five-flat collective dwelling and an office.
The construction would be carried out by small workshops, if not through self-build, and in this process we learnt to put the ‘author’ into perspective. Or rather: to dissolve them into the work itself, which is also the project. Locksmith, carpenter, bricklayer, electrician — all on-site creators.
The office is situated on the ground floor as an extension of the atrium, with a large, diffusely lit rock forming the visual focal point.
