Description
The Customs House is a customs facility, shaped by the changing ‘moods’ of the River Douro and by the successive transformations in trade relations between Portugal and the rest of the world.
An iconic landmark in the city and a key architectural and heritage site, this 19th-century building covers an area of 36,800 m², opening out onto both the city of Porto and the River Douro, in a prime location which, combined with its monumental scale, gives it a special prominence amongst the region’s public spaces.
The redevelopment project for this site has been underway since 1993, under the guidance of architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. It is guided by the installation of the facilities required for a modern, multifaceted and multipurpose cultural space, whilst taking care to enhance all the elements that characterise the distinctive architecture of a customs house.
