Description
The D. Maria Pia Bridge (1877, designed by Gustave Eiffel and Théophile Seyrig) and the Porto Customs House Railway Branch Line (1888, designed by Justino Teixeira and Mendes Guerreiro) are two pieces of infrastructure that bear witness to the country’s modernisation and the city’s industrialisation in the late 19th century. These remarkable engineering feats were decommissioned in the early 1990s, fell into disrepair due to a lack of maintenance, and were consigned to oblivion. The land on the Douro escarpment where the branch line and the bridge stand had become wasteland, a rubbish dump and areas of substandard housing prone to landslides. More recently, the CMP has begun work to stabilise and clear the escarpment, whilst simultaneously launching a debate on the future of these two structures, which offer a privileged view over the Douro.
